As all types of engineers design parts, systems, or processes based upon physical matter (stuff), understanding how matter can be rearranged to make and modify useful materials is valueable for any kind of engineer. Thus knowledge of materials can enhance any other engineering degree.
For this reason, many students may wish to complete a minor in Materials Science and Engineering to deepen their ability to make intelligent choices about selecting materials or processing strategies to enhance material properties. This can also help them know what kinds of expertise is available to modifiy or optimize materials needed for a particular design or system.
The MSE minor requires completion of 18 credits of Materials Science and Engineering coursework . 6 of these credits can satisfy both major and minor requriements (double counted).
