Motivation
As all types of engineers design parts, systems, or processes based upon physical matter (stuff), understanding how matter can be rearranged to make and modify useful materials is valuable for any kind of engineer. Thus knowledge of materials can enhance any other engineering degree.
For this reason, many students may wish to complete a minor in Materials Science and Engineering to deepen their ability to make intelligent choices about selecting materials or processing strategies to enhance material properties. This can also help them know what kinds of expertise are available to modify or optimize materials needed for a particular design or system.
Requirements
The MSE minor requires the completion of 18 credits of Materials Science and Engineering coursework. For some engineering majors, up to six of those 18 credits could already be a mandatory requirement, potentially reducing the effective requirement to 12 credits.
