Below is a summary of the status of the web/database interface that is used to provide a low-maintenence up-to-date website that writes web pages on the fly from data stored in a database. Permissions for writing to the database depend on three main security groups which include (from highest access) Instructors, Staff and TAs. Faculty, graduate students, and TAs are part of the database of people with authorized access.
Faculty Capabilities
- Update Project Information - Enter information about your research projects. This information will automatically appear on your faculty page AND the departmental research categories. Research projects can be shared among faculty for multi-investigator projects. The person who creates the project is the owner. Other faculty can then add the project description to their projects.
- Update Facuty Publication information.
- Upload Faculty Photo to Website
Staff Capabilities
- Administer Student Users - Permits staff access to administer student users in the authorization table.
- Administer Course Override Requests - A designated staff member gets an email and can then look up the record in the database, record administrative comments, forward the request to a faculty member, return to database at a later time to respond to student. The database keeps records until the staff member decides to delete them.
- Staff Page Editor (available after Staff login) - Permits staff to edit their listings for the staff web page.

- Create a Profile and Edit it
- Edit Course Page - If listed as a TA and specifically given permission, the TA can edit a course page but cannot change editing priveledges for themselves or other TAs.
Indexes
Below is a summary of the different indexes that can be viewed by the public.
- Listing of Research Project Titles by Category - Dynamically pulls up research project titles for the entire department sorted by the category names selected by the faculty member. The same records are displayed on the faculty web pages of participating faculty.
- Research Project Descriptions for a Category - Dynamically pulls up research project descriptions once a research category has been selected and shows all investigators. (Biotechnology used as an example).
- Faculty Listing - Produces a list of all faculty with faculty pages. Faculty can update their records at any time.
- Index of Graduate Students - Lists graduate students and Post-Docs. Students can update their records at any time.
- Staff Listings - Produces a list of the staff members and a link to their departmental web page with job and contact information. It also produces a link to email them directly from the index page. Staff may update their records at any time.
- Course Page Listing - Produces a list of course pages sorted by semester and year. Updated automatically when semester and year are changed by editing page.
