1. Regular Status. Admission to a Ph.D. program with regular
status may be granted by the Department, subject to the availability
of resources and to the approval of the Dean, upon consideration
of the likelihood that the applicant will be able to pursue
a doctoral program successfully without taking collateral
work that cannot be applied towards the program. As evidence
of eligibility for admission any one of the following may
be offered:
a. A Bachelor's degree or a Master's degree in engineering
or a related field;
b. Completion of the equivalent of a Master's degree program
in the major field;
c. Evidence of ability and resolution to complete a Ph.D.
program, as attested by the Department upon review of the
applicant's academic record, test scores, experience, reference
statements, professional qualifications, proposed studies
and other relevant information.
d. Foreign applicants must provide test scores on Test of
English Language (TOEFL) and Graduate Record Examinations
(GRE) in analytical, quantitative, and verbal aptitude.
2. Provisional Status. Admission to a Ph.D. program with
provisional status may be granted by the Department, subject
to the approval of the Dean:
a. To an applicant qualified for regular admission except
that collateral work as part of the program is deemed necessary
(a time limit for removing provisional status may be imposed
by the department); or
b. To a qualified applicant whose total record is not complete.
The provisional status will be changed to regular status
when subsequent evaluation justifies such a change, as determined
by the Department and approved by the Dean.
3. Non-degree Status. Admission for study not constituting
part of a degree program may be granted by the Department,
subject to approval of the Dean, to an applicant holding a
M.S. degree. If this student is subsequently admitted to regular
status, credit for courses taken in non-degree status may,
in certain cases, be applied to a degree program upon recommendation
by the student's major department and approval of the Dean.
