1. Regular Status. Admission to an M.S. program with regular
status may be granted by the Department, subject to the availability
of resources and to the approval of the Associate Dean, upon
consideration of the likelihood that the applicant will be
able to pursue a graduate program successfully without taking
collateral work that cannot be applied toward the program.
As evidence of eligibility for admission, any of the following
may be offered:
a. A Bachelor's degree in an accredited program in engineering
with high academic achievement.
b. A Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field
where the applicant has shown a very high academic achievement.
c. Evidence of ability and resolution to complete a master's
program, as attested by the department upon review of the
applicant's academic record, test scores, experience, reference
statements, professional qualifications, proposed studies,
and other relevant information.
d. Foreign applicants must provide scores on Test of English
as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and analytical, quantative,
and verbal scores from Graduate Record Examinations (GRE).
2. Provisional Status. Admission to an M.S. program with
provisional status may be granted
by the Department, subject to the approval of the Dean:
a. To an applicant otherwise qualified for regular admission
except that collateral work as part of the program is deemed
necessary. If collateral work is required, the acceptable
grade and term by which the collateral requirements must
be met will be specified on the admission form; or
b. To a qualified applicant whose records are incomplete.
The provisional status will be changed to regular status
when the conditions specified on the admission form have been
met, as certified by the Department and approved by the Associate
Dean.
The Department welcomes applications from students who possess
a B.S. degree in any related engineering or science discipline.
A student admitted to an M.S. program in Materials Science
who has received his/her previous degree(s) in another discipline
will be admitted under the provision that he/she obtains and
shows proficiency in the material contained in the following
courses:
MSM 351, Thermochemistry of Materials;
MSM 355, Mechanical Behavior of Materials;
MSM 365, Physical Metallurgy I.
To show proficiency, the student must have completed an equivalent
course, must take the course and earn a minimum grade of 3.0;
or must pass an examination on the course material sanctioned
by the Graduate Studies Committee. A time limit to remove
the provisional status will be determined by the Graduate
Studies Committee. The 400 level courses may be applied to
the student's graduate program, as long as the minimum number
of 800/900 credits required for the M.S. program is met.
3. Non-degree Status. Admission for study not constituting
part of a degree program may be granted by the Department,
subject to approval by the Dean, to an applicant holding a
B.S. degree. If the student is subsequently admitted to regular
status, credit for courses taken in non-degree status may,
in certain cases, be applied to a degree program upon recommendation
by the student's major department and approval of the Dean.
