Labeling of Hazardous Waste
How to fill out a waste tag. Note: the designation for 'Container size' and 'Waste type' are now at the top of the tag.
The required waste pick up tags are too small to use for 5 gal containers that are used to collect small amount of waste periodically. However the regulations require that the container be labeled with the contents. This can be done by attaching a small half size clipboard to the container handle along with the waste pick up tag. You can create a small form to list the periodic waste additions. Complete the top part of the waste pick up tag and list the full chemical names on the waste pick up tag. You can leave the area for 'amount' blank if you use the small attached clipboard form to log the incremental additions. If you constantly add the same chemicals, it is OK to use abbreviations on this clipboard form if you also provide a key at the bottom of the temporary form (e.g. 'Note: EtOH = ethanol, Hex = Hexane') . Be sure NOT to use abbreviations on the waste pick up tag. Just total the additions periodically and put the totals at the top of the next clipboard form. When you are ready to dispose of the container, complete the column for 'Amount or Approx Conc.' on the waste pick up tag.
Collection of waste from HPLCs
HPLCs generate constant chemical waste. It is acceptable to pump directly into a waste container if the vessel is 'closed' with an attached and completed waste pick up tag. For a glass bottle, you may drill small holes for through a lid to accept the detector effluent tubing or close by wrapping parafilm around the top and HPLC effluent tubing. For a 5 gal container, drill small holes through the lid to accept the detector effluent tubing. When you start to use a new container, just swap the lids to keep using your lid with holes.
